What Is Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Asian eyelid surgery is performed to create an upper eyelid with a crease (double eyelid). Typically, Asian women seek this procedure because they want to be able to apply eyeliner easier. It's also very popular among Asian men as it creates a more bright-eyed appearance. Puffy bulges of skin below the eyelids can be significantly improved, as well. This procedure is also referred to as Asian blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery. In many cases, the skin removal improves the patient’s vision because the excess tissue is no longer impairing their field of vision. Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Peter Chang is excited to offer Asian eyelid surgery at Timeless Plastic Surgery in Sugar Land, TX. If you are interested in improving your cosmetic but don't want to alter your ethnic look, call our office today to schedule a consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Asian eyelid surgery, also known as double eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at creating a crease in the upper eyelid, or enhancing a pre-existing one, a feature that is often not naturally present in many individuals of Asian descent. Potential benefits of Asian eyelid surgery performed by Dr. Chang at Timeless Plastic Surgery include:

  • Creating a balanced and symmetrical facial appearance
  • Boosting self-confidence
  • Improving eyesight
  • Producing a look of larger and more vibrant eyes
  • Better eye contact
  • A customized surgical procedure

Who Is a Good Candidate for Asian Eyelid Surgery?

You are a great candidate for Asian eyelid surgery if you have small or nonexistent upper eyelid folds, asymmetrical contour, or have a tired looking expression due to excess skin above the upper eyelid. This procedure can also address puffy skin below the lower eyelid. In addition, candidates should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations of their outcomes.

What Is Our Asian Eyelid Surgical Technique?

Upper Eyelid Surgery
There are several methods that are frequently used when performing Asian eyelid surgery. The most common approaches include incisional or non-incisional. The technique used will be determined once your customized treatment plan is created. The overall goal is to create an upper eyelid crease or double eyelid appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery
During lower eyelid surgery, typically an incision is made along the bottom of the lash line. This allows Dr. Chang to remove excess fat and tissue for a smoother appearance. Patients who have dark circles under their eyes will sometimes have a deficiency of fat in these areas. Injectables can also be used to help fill these soft-tissue deficiencies and can improve the appearance of these circles.

What to Expect from Asian Eyelid Surgery

Asian eyelid surgery is performed under IV sedation as an outpatient procedure on-site in our AAAASF certified facility. It generally takes about one hour but can take two hours if the lower eyelids are being addressed as well. Following surgery, the area around the eyes will be bruised and swollen. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided, but we also encourage you to use ice packs to help reduce swelling. In addition, you should keep your head elevated when resting and sleep upright for the first few nights following surgery.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

How much does it cost?
The cost of your eyelid procedure will depend on whether you are addressing the upper or lower eyelids or all four at one time. Once your customized treatment plan is created, we can calculate an estimate of your costs. We accept many payments and can help you find medical financing to make your treatment more affordable.

Visible scars?
After surgery, scarring will not be visible because of where the incisions are placed. In the upper eyelid, the incisional method will follow the natural crease of the eye. With the non-incisional technique, a fine thread or stitch is used to create a crease, which requires no incisions. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision will run just under the eyelashes or inside the eyelid, making scarring inconspicuous.

Any side effects?
You may experience some dryness and minimal irritation following surgery. If these occur, we can recommend ointments and eye drops to assist during the healing phase. You should protect your eyes against wind and sun irritation for the first several months by wearing dark sunglasses.

Recovery?
If an incisional method was used, then typically patients will start to see results at around 1 – 2 weeks. The recovery period for non-incisional surgery is generally 2 – 3 days. These timeframes can vary from patient to patient. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery process, we encourage you to call our office.

Vision improvement?
An added benefit of eyelid surgery is that it can help improve the vision for many patients. Not only does it create a natural double eyelid and an overall refreshed look, but it eliminates the excess skin that may have been impairing vision.
